The North Shore University Hospital Medical Staff Society’s mission is to promote, provide and support medical education in order to maintain the highest scientific and educational standards; to maintain the highest professional standards among its members; to provide representation from it’s membership to the hospital’s medical board and all its committees in support of the hospital’s institutional objectives, including standards of patient care, patient welfare, and physician character and competence; to act as a spokesperson for the interest of the active medical staff; and to promote social and professional fellowship among its members. myWellCheck

A myWellCheck visit is a voluntary 60-minute health screening and coaching session to go over a health risk assessment (HRA) to measure your risk for heart disease and diabetes. Each visit provides on-the-spot results of your numbers and an opportunity to have a personal discussion with a Wellness Nurse to explore actions you can take to achieve your health & wellness goals in order to improve your well-being.

  • Sleep Seven Or More Hours A Night – Prioritizing getting enough sleep every night is a great way to make sure you will be energized throughout the day. Not getting enough rest can lead to poor health conditions, a lack of energy, and motivation, and negatively impact your mood. You can improve your sleep quality by not looking at screens close to bedtime and being in a dark and quiet environment. Good sleep quality can lead to better productivity and well-being.
  • Eat Healthily – Having a well-balanced diet is easily one of the best things you can do to take care of yourself. Your diet should be composed of fruits, vegetables, lean protein, low-fat dairy, and whole grains. Eating healthy can improve your mood, strengthen your bones and decrease your risk of disease.
  • Exercise Regularly – Exercise has so many benefits including reducing stress, strengthening muscles, and improving energy and mood. For adults, at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise is recommended per week. Some great types of exercise include walking, running, swimming, lifting weights, and biking.
  • Drink Water – Drinking enough water every day shouldn’t be overlooked as our bodies are 60% water and our muscles are about 80% water. What to Know About BA 5 Variant

While the world has opened up more, COVID-19 is still a major threat. As it spreads, mutations occur, resulting in new variants. Currently making up a majority of the United States’ COVID-19 cases is Omicron’s BA.5 variant. Due to the highly-transmissible nature of this variant, the United States is facing an increase in cases. Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital is here to keep you safe. The BA.5 variant, which is to be immune-evasive and highly transmissible, has caused COVID-19 cases in the United States to rise. This is due to a mutation of the spike protein, impacting cell entry and somewhat allowing the variant to avoid antibodies.

Unlike the earlier times in the pandemic, safety is now taken less seriously and infected individuals may infect more people. Staying Protected Against BA.5

  • Being vaccinated
    • Receiving three doses of the vaccine is more protective than only two doses. Booster vaccinations help work against immune evasion by increasing antibodies.
  • Previously being infected with Omicron
    • A protection rate of 76% against a symptomatic reinfection of BA.5 has been found for those who have had an Omicron case of COVID-19.
  • Previously being infected with a pre-Omicron variant.
    • A protection rate of 15% against a symptomatic reinfection of BA.5 has been found for those who have had a case of a variant such as Delta or Alpha.
